A motorhome company from Telford has given ultra-runner Keith Robins, the loan of a motorhome to help him in a 95-mile marathon and to raise money for Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes.

The 62 year-old ex- bank manager from Gnosall, will be taking part in the grueling West Highland Way Race from the 23rd June – 24th June.

Due to the remoteness of the run, and a condition of entry, Keith will be joined by three other support crew who will also be using the four-berth Carado 447 to transport them to the start of the race in Milngavie, near Glasgow and through the six checkpoints up to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.

Admission to the WHW race is subject to strict screening to ensure entrants have the relevant experience and ability to take part. Entry proved no problem for keen runner, Keith who, in 2010, was a Finisher in the 250km Marathon des Sables (a seven-day race across the Moroccan Sahara) where he raised £19,500 for charity.

Keith said: “Having completed the race twice before, I know what is in store but with a location as remote as it is and unpredictable weather, you are never really sure what you might get! My challenge this time is to beat my previous record and complete the race in under 30.5 hours.

“It’s great knowing I have a strong support crew and safe and sound transportation thanks to Travelworld, as it would have been impossible to do the race without both. Of course, the incentive to raise money for SSCBB, such a vital and unsung service relied on by so many, is a huge driver to spur me on for the race.”

SSCBB is a charity, run purely by volunteers, which transports urgent blood products, donated breast milk for premature babies, bone marrow samples, fecal matter transplants, small pieces of surgical equipment and much more, free of charge, between hospitals in Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire. This year, the charity received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups.

Helen Bundy from SSCBB said: “We were delighted to hear that Keith wanted to support our charity and what a challenge he has set for himself! Support from individuals like Keith allows us to continue to offer a free service to our local hospitals. Without these donations we would simply not exist. We wish him the very best of luck.”

Rent Easy manager at Travelworld, Stuart Phipps said: “When Keith approached us about the loan of a motorhome and what his plan was, we immediately wanted to support him. The Carado is one of the most popular motorhomes for rental and perfect for Keith and his crew. We wish him all the best for his challenge!”
