March and rally to be held over Telford A&E closure fears

Campaigners fighting to keep the A&E unit open at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital will be holding a third march and rally next month.

The protest will be held on November 4 in Wellington over concerns that the department is facing temporary night closures and may be relocated under the Future Fit programme.

It is being organised by the campaign group NHS4All and Telford & Wrekin Council.

More than 17,000 people have signed an online petition after the board of Shrewsbury & Telford Hospitals NHS Trust voted to press ahead with the overnight closure of the department.

The decision has sparked major concern from the town's politicians, resulting in a summit with hospital management and a pledge to ask the government to intervene by providing more middle grade doctors for the hospital.

Future Fit would see either Princess Royal Hospital Telford or Royal Shrewsbury Hospital become the county's only A&E department.

The site which houses the A&E would also take on women and children's services, which are currently based at PRH, and the hospital without the A&E would become the county's centre for planned care. A decision is expected next year and a public consultation exercise recently ended.
