Off-duty officer helps after telegraph pole crash near Broseley

An off-duty police officer was the first to come across a car that had knocked down a telegraph pole near Broseley, and pitched in with making the scene safe.

At 5.10pm on Wednesday PCSO Mike Watkins was travelling on the B5373 when he saw a car that had hit the pole and deployed its airbags.

He checked the driver over before calling in for support.

A police spokesman said: "Fortunately the driver had no serious injuries, however, an ambulance was called as the airbags in the car had deployed and it was thought sensible to get the driver checked over by trained medical staff.

"The ambulance was soon on the scene and conducted an assessment, the driver did not need any further treatment.

"The cable from the telegraph pole was completely blocking the road, making it dangerous for traffic, so the road had to be closed.

"Police officers arrived at the scene and PCSO Watkins was able to continue his journey home after ensuring that they had the situation under control and did not need his assistance."

The B5373 was closed for more than three hours, and just after 8.30pm the car had been recovered, the pole and cable removed and fluid on the road cleared.
